Take a ride on the Panoramique des Dômes train to the summit of the Puy de Dôme volcano. A fun and unique way to discover the Chaine des Puys and the volcanoes of Auvergne!
Peaking at 1485 m, the Puy de Dôme is the tallest point of the Chaine des Puys, a volcanic mountain range that counts no less than 80 volcanoes aligned north to south over 30 km. To protect this natural site, listed as a Grand Site de France, but also to give access to all, the summit can be reached year-round by an electric rack railway.
The 15-minute journey to the summit circles the volcano, giving passengers a 360° view of the surrounding landscapes. Once at the top, enjoy views of Clermont-Ferrand, the Limagne Plain and the Forez Mountains to the east. To the south, discover the peaks of the Auvergne Volcanoes Park – the Puy de Sancy and the Cantal Mountains. To the west you’ll see the gentle hills of the Combrailles, and just to the north, the iconic crater volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys.
Both train stations offer interpretive areas to learn more about the volcanoes, history and culture of the area. At the summit, you can’t miss the ruins of the Gallo-Roman Mercure Temple, built in the 2nd century. An interactive information area offers more information about the ruins. Free audio guides are available.
Why not pair your ride on the Panoramique des Dômes with a hike in the volcanoes? There are two trails to the summit: the Chemin des Muletiers (Mule-drivers Trail) begins at the Col de Ceyssat parking area, and the Chemin des Chèvres (Goat Trail) begins at the train station.
For an exciting experience, book a flight with a paragliding school.
The site offers several dining options. At the main train station, a take-away stand offers sandwiches and drinks. At the summit, the 1911 is a fine dining restaurant serving refined seasonal food and using local ingredients, and the Bousset is a bar and café with self-service facilities for lunch. A covered picnic area is also available with drink and snack machines.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the main site (at the counter or the automated machines). Children under 4 ride free and there are special packages for families. The train and the different buildings are all accessible to visitors with disabilities.
From April to September, a shuttle operates from the centre of Clermont-Ferrand to the train station. For timetables, visit www.t2c.fr
