Relax and refuel in Auvergne

Auvergne is a perfect holiday destination in its own right, but sometimes you're just passing through. Here are some ideas for a break in Auvergne!

Ideally located in the heart of France, Auvergne is great place to stop, relax and take in the views: whether you're just looking for a bite to eat and a place to stretch your legs, or you need a place to stay the night.

A volcanic break

You'll know you've reached Auvergne when you catch the first glimpse of the volcanoes!

Coming from the north, it's the Chaîne des Puys that you'll see, a mountain range with 80 volcanoes. Only 30 minutes from the motorway is the tallest of the range, the Puy de Dôme. Take a ride to the summit on the rackrailway the Panoramique des Dômes.

If you arrive from the South, it's the Cantal mountains that dominate. Take a stop at the medieval town of Saint-Flour for a view, or head into Murat for a closer look.

And if you're passing through on the A89, it's just a 25 minute detour to Le Mont-Dore, to take a ride to the summit of the Massif Central's highest summit, Le Puy de Sancy.

Charming villages and Romanesque churches

The Auvergne is home to 11 of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Several of them are along the motorway (Charroux, Saint-Saturnin, Montpeyroux, Usson, Saint-Floret, Blesle, Lavaudieu), offering a refreshing break to wander the cobblestone streets and grab a coffee or a meal.

Auvergne is also home to unique Romanesque buildings, including the Saint-Austremoine Abbey Church in Issoire and the Saint-Julien basilica in Brioude, both near the motorway.

Take a city break in Auvergne

The towns of Auvergne offer exciting cultural calendars in addition to shopping, restaurants and quality accommodations.

Stop off in Montluçon and visit the new MuPop music museum. Discover the unique thermal heritage of Vichy. Or take a break in Clermont-Ferrand, home of the Michelin tyre company.

Discover a selection of accommodations 30 minutes or less from the motorway.
