The Auvergne's two regional nature parks

Most of the Auvergne is protected land, with two regional nature parks which are both outstanding holiday destinations here in France. These wild, wide open spaces will give you a taste of the unspoiled natural environment, where you can admire a wide variety of fauna and flora. Here, tourism is being developed and expanded based on a spirit of environmental awareness.

In the east of the Auvergne region is the Livradois Forez Regional Nature Park, which stretches out over the départements (counties) of the Haute-Loire and the Puy-de-Dôme. Combining landscapes of varying altitudes, the area’s hills and plateaux make this a very rich and diverse region.

In the west lies the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, Europe's largest regional park. Here, the towering symbols of the Massif Central stand shoulder to shoulder to form a unique landscape shaped by millions of years of history.

These two protected areas are also home to a rural population which lives in harmony with its environment. For the more curious among you, your nature holiday can also include a fascinating discovery of the skills and know-how developed over the centuries by the region's inhabitants. The town of Thiers for example, is renowned for its cutlery industry. For its part, Ambert and its surrounding area is known for its paper, braids and shoelaces. A wealth of trades and crafts are waiting to be discovered along the Livradois Forez Trades Trail which is perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace.

So take the time to meet the people and savour the landscapes of this simple yet generous region!
