In southern Auvergne, Haute Loire, stretches the Massif du Mézenc. This entirely volcanic mountain range is a vast wilderness, in which skiing and winter sports can really be enjoyed in the open countryside.
This is where the Loire rises from, at the foot of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, which makes it a legendary location! Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding mean you can access these secret places yourself, and all sorts of winter activities are available: cross-country skiing, Alpine skiing, snowboarding and even snowkiting.
This small winter sports resort is located just 2 kilometres from the village of Les Estables, at the foot of Mont Mézenc, which is where the lifts depart from. Families will love the Alpine skiing and snowboarding trails, which are ideal for beginners, together with a peaceful atmosphere perfectly suited to people’s first experiences of holidays in the snow. Both children and adults can enjoy snowshoeing as well as dog sledding.
And cross-country skiers will be in for a real treat, with 70 kilometres of trails comprising the Nordic skiing area. And for even bigger adrenaline buzzes, you can have a go at snowkiting, which is the winter version of kitesurfing.
There is entertainment at the resort throughout the season, with various sports and festive events taking place: an annual dog sledding race, the Mézenc marathon, Nanaloppet (ladies’ cross-country skiing race) and more.
In the Massif du Meygal, the resort of Queyrières - Boussoulet is the perfect location for people who enjoy Nordic activities. The groomed trails in the pine forests can be used for both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing for some unforgettable walks and hikes in a welcome change of surroundings.
Come and experience the wild mountainsides of the Massif du Mézenc this winter!
