Built from lava stone on a volcanic hill, Usson overlooks the Varennes plain.
It was here that the Auvergne's greatest fortress was built. The small village was once overlooked by a castle in which Queen Margot was locked away for 19 years. The presence of winegrowers’ houses reminds us that for a long while, winegrowing was Usson’s main activity. To reach the small Romanesque church, you should take the narrow streets lined with black stone houses followed by a small path which will take you to the village’s basalt columns.
