Clermont-Ferrand and its nearby rounded volcanoes with their abundant vegetation offer a marvellous showcase of the many good things the Auvergne has to offer its visitors. This regional capital is a remarkably dynamic town, an open town synonymous with freedom. A town with no time for superficialities. A cinema town with a taste for rock music and festivities, with lively pedestrian streets and a rich architectural heritage hewn from volcanic stone.
If king-size natural attractions are your thing, then be sure to visit the Puy de Dôme, from where you can enjoy one of the clearest views of the Les Puys range from a panoramic viewpoint located on the site. The Puy de Dôme is listed as a "Grand site de France" and to give you an idea of the quality of this site we should mention that it is twinned with Mount Fujiyama. Don't take our word for it though, take a trip up to the top and see for yourself!
In 2012, you will be able to reach the summit by taking the "Panoramique des Dômes" rack train service.
From here, you can see the Gergovie plateau, where Vercingetorix drove back Caesar.
