If you're looking for an active holiday as a family, take a look at Sancy-Volcans in the south-west of the Auvergne's Puy-de-Dôme region. In an area in which Mother Nature has been especially bountiful, located in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, you will certainly appreciate the huge variety of well preserved landscapes, in addition to the warmth and intimacy of the stops and attractions along the way when visiting our historical heritage sites and sampling our delicious auvergnat cuisine, whether in winter or summer.
In the winter, out on the slopes of the Sancy range you can enjoy downhill skiing in the ski resorts of Mont-Dore and Super-Besse, in an interconnected ski area with approximately 85 km (53 miles) of ski slopes. Chastreix-Sancy offers a family-friendly environment and 16 km (10 miles) of downhill slopes.
These three resorts and the sites of Guéry, Pessade or Egliseneuve d’Entraigues never fail to delight cross-country skiers with 400 km (248 miles) of marked out and tamped-down trails. With snowshoeing or hiking routes covering over 130 km (80 miles) and dogsled trails, you can combine fun in the snow with your love for nature, as you discover the area’s many natural attractions. Share your adventure with our guides during a guided night-time snowshoe hike and enjoy a traditional meal at an inn.
You can begin your stay in the very heart of the Massif du Sancy (Sancy range) which started life here 3 million years ago. The Puy de Sancy (1,886m or 6,187 ft) is the highest point of this mountain range and of the Massif Central too. Discover all the richness and diversity of the nature reserves, volcanic lakes (Pavin, Guéry, Aydat, Chambon, etc) and valleys (Chaudefour, Fontaine Salée, etc) where the local flora and fauna are protected.
From the Les Puys chain with its 80 volcanoes (including the Puy de Dôme, Puy de la Vache and Puy de Lassolas), the 17 km (10.5 miles) long "Cheire d’Aydat" lava flow bears witness to the area’s explosive past.
The wild rivers with their abundant fish are always popular with fishermen, while the specially landscaped lakes are perfect for water-based activities including:
bathing, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing, not forgetting hiking and cycling.
Take advantage of your stay in Sancy-Volcans to top up with health, vitality and fitness as you discover the many benefits of the thermal waters at the resorts of La Bourboule and Le Mont Dore. Relax and unwind with a range of treatments including jet showers and whirlpool baths.
As part of the area’s natural heritage, throughout your visits and tours you can appreciate the charm of the traditional volcanic stone houses with their flagstone roofs. The Orcival basilica and the Church of Saint-Saturnin offer a journey into the fascinating world of the Auvergne's Romanesque art. The chateaux of Cordès and La Batisse provide a chance to discover French-style gardens designed by Le Nôtre. The organised tours of the castle of Murol and the château of La Batisse will introduce you to life on this estate during the 13th century.
With its military-style architecture, the Castle of Saint-Saturnin is the former residence of Catherine de Médicis and her daughter, Queen Margot.
The natural and cultural treasures awaiting you in the Sancy Volcans area are your guarantee of an enjoyable stay.
