Saint-Flour

From atop its basaltic rocky spur, Saint-Flour is situated in an ideal natural and historical setting which has earned it the prestigious "Region of Art and History" label. Behind the apparent austerity of its Volvic stone we find a rich architectural heritage and many other fascinating discoveries waiting to be shared.

The fortified gates and the remains of the ramparts, the 15th century cathedral and its black Christ, the former Bishop's Palace which is today home to the Haute Auvergne Museum, and the Alfred Douët Museum of Art and History in its maison consulaire (a superb piece of Renaissance architecture), are all excellent examples of the high-quality architectural heritage to be seen in this town of the Cantal area.

There's nothing more enjoyable than walking through its narrow mediaeval streets, through quaint squares with historically revealing names such as the "Place du Palais" or the "Place d’Armes", where you can stop off at the numerous cafe terraces or restaurants for a welcome break.
Saint-Flour also continues the age-old tradition of organising local festivities, with the creation of cultural events today famous far beyond the borders of the Auvergne, including the Festival des Hautes Terres, devoted to mountain culture or the Festa del Païs, a major annual festival for the mountain farming and rural communities.
Saint-Flour, (which has been a staging point in the Tour de France on several occasions in the past), is heavily influenced by the lifestyle of the high mountain peaks in the nearby Cantal Massif range.

A stay in Saint-Flour, on the edge of the Aubrac area offers a great opportunity to enjoy a session or two at Caleden, the new recreational spa centre located in the Chaudes-Aigues spa resort. The resort’s name translates as "acutely hot", and is particularly appropriate as its waters are the hottest in Europe at 82°C (180°F). Another attraction of this spa town is its gastronomy and its Michelin-rated chef Serge Vieira.
Whether for a weekend stay or a holiday, Saint-Flour is your ideal base camp, offering something for everyone. Start getting ready for your holiday today!
